Since 2003, when the Portuguese Association began awarding college scholarships,the nonprofit organization has given $67,000 to sixty-four residents of Maui County. Then, please add the 2024 numbers - delivered to the awardees on Sunday, July 7, 2024: USD 5,500 and five awardees.

  • Leia Hiwalani Smythe is currently enrolled in UH Maui College studying toward a Master’s Degree in Social Work
  • Gabriella Leialoha Pinheiro is currently enrolled at Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska pursuing a degree in occupational therapy.
  • Joleen Rose Alexander is currently enrolled at Chaminade University in Honolulu pursuing a degree in Forensic Science.
  • Shayna Isabelle Villon is a 2024 Graduate of Maui High School where she ranked first in a class of 395 students and was the class valedictorian. Shayna will attend George Fox University in Newburg, Oregon where she plans to pursue a degree in civil engineering.
  • Sidney Kameali’i Phillips Tanaka graduated magna cum laude last year in her undergraduate studies at Pacific University in Hillsboro, Oregon. She is currently enrolled as a graduate student at Pacific University pursuing her doctorate in Audiology. She received the 2004 Richard and Fátima Cameron award for overall excellence in academics, leadership and community service. She was unable to attend the awards ceremony because she was still attending classes at Pacific University in Oregon.
